Client story

Staying social through a home care package

Margy Bennett (96) lives in a house that she built with her husband in Daylesford over 70 years ago. As a young couple in their 20s, they built their dream home with their own hands.

Since her husband passed, she’s been living there by herself with the assistance provided by CHRH as part of her Home Care Package. She receives help with medication, food delivery, gardening, home cleaning, travel assistance through taxi vouchers and is taken to appointments by our team.

But why her story is interesting is how she has utilised her home care package to stay connected with her community and even tracked down a long-lost childhood friend.

Margy and Ida had been friends since they were two years old. They grew up together and got into all sorts of strife. As they got on in life they lost connection and eventually lost touch. Our CHRH @ Home team caught wind of this and tracked her down and found out she was in an aged care facility in Melbourne. We then arranged for Margy to travel down to see her.

‘It was just fabulous,” said Margy.

And it was in the nick of time because shortly after that, Ida’s dementia deteriorated so much that she would not have recognised Margy. For Margy to be able to connect with a friend she had known for 90 years was something that she was extremely grateful for.’

What does it cost?

Eligibility for a Home Care Package is determined by the Aged Care Assessment Service. This assessment is free and conducted in your home by experienced professionals.

Home care packages are income-tested by the government. If your circumstances allow, you may be asked to contribute to the cost of your care. If you are assessed as eligible for a home care package you can use the fee estimator to help calculate your costs in My Aged Care www.myagedcare.gov.au.

You can discuss and agree to any fees with us before you receive services.
